Also called Mezquita-Catedral, it was built as a mosque at the end of the 8th century on the site of the Hispano-Roman basilica of San Vicente Mártir.
The mosque underwent up to three extensions over the years to become the second largest mosque until the 16th century when the Blue Mosque was built.
In the 13th century, after the Christian conquest, the mosque building was consecrated as a cathedral, but it was not until the 16th century that the cruciform basilica we find today in the center of the building was built.
It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain, with more than 2 million visitors.
